Honeybees face a daily problem: how does a worker bee tell hundreds of hivemates where to find a patch of flowers? Researchers have shown that the answer lies in a sequence of movements called the waggle dance. After returning to the hive, a forager bee walks in a tight figure-eight pattern across the vertical surface of the honeycomb. The straight middle portion of the figure eight points in the direction of the food source, measured against the angle of the sun. The length of that straight run signals distance: longer runs mean the flowers are farther away. Other workers crowd around, touching the dancer with their antennae, and within minutes the hive's foraging effort shifts toward the new patch.
