Typical variance = the wide normal range (respond: differentiate, be patient). Atypical variance = far outside the range or regressing (respond: document, then refer).

COMMON TRAP: Psychological = relationship with self (identity, emotion). Social = relationship with others (peers, belonging). Fear of looking stupid is psychological; copying friends is social.

Lower blocks first. A hungry, frightened, or excluded student is not free to learn; meet the need, then teach.
Piaget's Stages of Cognition
The shift is gradual and uneven: the same seventh grader can be abstract in math, concrete in history. That is why manipulatives still belong in middle school.
Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development
Scaffolding is the support that holds a learner inside the gold band, removed as competence grows. This is social learning theory's core move.
Bruner's Spiral Curriculum + Discovery
Bruner's cognitivism adds discovery learning: students uncover the principle before you name it.
