How to prepare for GACE Educational Leadership: Tier II

TeacherPreps preparation guidance based on the exam framework linked below. Adjust the plan to your experience and your practice results.

  1. Find your starting point

Read the written assessment format, then draft a response to a leadership scenario of your own under timed conditions. Compare it with the format requirements and note where your plan, evidence or explanation was thin.

  2. Study the leadership content this exam emphasizes

Leading the Professional Growth and Development of Staff and Fostering School Culture. For staff development and supervision, review the cycle of observation, feedback, coaching and evaluation, and the difference between supporting growth and documenting performance. Know how a leader builds shared leadership through teams and professional learning communities, and how professional learning is planned from identified needs.

Data Analysis and Strategic Planning. For mission, vision and improvement planning, practice moving from evidence to action. Given school data, name the problem, set a measurable goal, choose a strategy with a clear rationale and describe how progress will be monitored and communicated. Scenario questions in this area tend to reward collaborative, data-informed planning over a decision made alone.

Engaging with Families/Caregivers and the Community and Managing School Operations and Resources. For family and community engagement and communication, rehearse how a leader shares information, invites participation and responds to concerns. In scenario questions, look for the response that is two-way, respectful of the audience and tied to student learning, and consider how the message fits each stakeholder group.

  3. Allocate review time using the framework and your gaps

Use the published content-area weights to balance your plan, and give extra time to areas where your practice shows gaps. A smaller weight does not make an area optional.

    • Leading the Professional Growth and Development of Staff and Fostering School Culture (42%)
    • Data Analysis and Strategic Planning (30%)
    • Engaging with Families/Caregivers and the Community and Managing School Operations and Resources (28%)

  4. Rehearse the format and testing conditions

Published testing time: 210 minutes (3 hours 30 minutes). The 240-minute appointment includes time beyond the test itself. Practice reading scenarios carefully: identify who is involved, what the leader is responsible for and what the question asks you to decide.
